Ombuds CharterStandards of Practice
Confidentiality
The Office of the University Staff Ombuds will not share or discuss your information with anyone. The information that visitors bring to the ombuds, along with the fact that an individual even met with the ombuds, will not be disclosed unless the ombuds has explicit permission to do so. This commitment to confidentiality enables visitors to the University Staff Ombuds Office to speak openly in a safe, trusted environment. The only exception to confidentiality is the imminent risk of harm.
Neutrality
The ombuds is a neutral and impartial resource. We do not advocate for any individual, group, department, or policy. Instead, the ombuds strives for fairness and objectivity in their work with visitors and their consideration of the issues. The ombuds promotes fairness and equitable processes, but does not advocate for a particular person or point of view. By listening to all perspectives, our office helps identify constructive strategies for improving communication and resolving disputes.
Informality
Our office does not have any formal authority to make decisions or change policies at Georgetown. Instead, we are an informal office whose purpose is to aid in problem resolution, unlike formal offices that may represent the University or have a mandated protocol for addressing complaints. Because we are informal, we have flexibility in how we address problems. We offer an informal space for individuals to discuss their concerns and explore various options for resolution. When appropriate, we may facilitate a conversation between individuals or groups. If needed, we may act as shuttle diplomats or plan customized group interventions. Working with the Office of the University Staff Ombuds is entirely voluntary.
Independence
The Office of the University Staff Ombuds operates independently from the University. This independence helps visitors to fully explore their available options without interference from, or obligation to, any individuals or University departments. Because the Office of the University Staff Ombuds is independent, the ombuds can raise systemic issues with the appropriate entities, no matter who they are or where they are located within the University.
